Origins · 24 Sep 2025 · a native X poll

It started with one question.

A year before the story began, Joseph Mallozzi asked his followers which kind of travel they would choose. Then, for a year, fan votes filled every seat on the bridge.

His pick · a reply the same evening

“Multiverse Travel - Wherein we journey along the road not taken, perhaps a past in which the Roman Empire never fell or a timeline where those ref-abetted cheater Patriots never won all those Super Bowls. Past, present, or future, paradoxes no longer apply since it’s not YOUR reality you’re screwing with so why the hell not?”
“So I’m going Multiverse.”

A year of brackets

First a ship, then a captain, then every seat on the bridge, one bracket at a time. Nineteen seats were filled by fan vote. The twentieth was saved for you.

Each seat got its own bracket, with a round posted almost every day, from opening rounds like the Sweet Sixteen through the Elite Eight and Final Four to a Championship. Votes went in the replies, and each matchup’s winner showed up in the next round’s images.

What is the Amalgaverse?

“The Amalgaverse is a shared sandbox of fictional SF universes that will serve as the setting for a series of missions that will play out as episodic adventures in the style of the beloved ship-based sci-fi shows of the 90’s.”

This seems like a lot of work. Why are you doing this?

“I’m tired of crafting stories (pitches, pilots scripts, series bibles) that never see the light of day, always subject to the whims of gormless executives. … But that’s my jam. And I’ve missed it.”Amalgaverse FAQ #1 and #13 · 20 Sep 2026 (opens in a new tab)
